Medical Billing Services in New Jersey
New Jersey is one of the densest billing markets in the country. Practices cluster in the Newark, Jersey City, and Paterson corridor, the state sits inside a tri-state labor market, and patients routinely carry coverage issued in New York or Pennsylvania. On the Medicaid side, NJ FamilyCare runs through five managed care plans, and paneling with one plan does not make a clinician billable to another. A claim sent to the wrong plan denies even when the provider is fully enrolled somewhere else.
MedPlus RCM provides medical billing, coding, credentialing, and denial management for New Jersey practices of every specialty, built around the state’s actual payers and programs.
New Jersey’s payer landscape
New Jersey Medicaid is delivered as NJ FamilyCare, the state’s Medicaid and CHIP program, through five contracted managed care plans: Aetna Better Health of New Jersey, Fidelis Care, Horizon NJ Health, UnitedHealthcare Community Plan, and Wellpoint (formerly Amerigroup New Jersey). Plan availability varies by county, and each plan handles its own referrals, prior authorizations, and care coordination. Verifying the member’s exact plan before the visit is the step that keeps NJ FamilyCare claims from denying on routing alone.
Commercial coverage is led by Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey, which covers more residents than any other insurer in the state, alongside Aetna, UnitedHealthcare, and Cigna. Because so many New Jersey patients work across state lines, practices also see a steady share of New York and Pennsylvania employer plans, which have to be verified and billed under their own rules.
What MedPlus RCM handles for New Jersey practices
- End-to-end medical billing. Charge entry, claim scrubbing, submission, payment posting, and patient billing. The full cycle.
- Medical coding. Certified coders assign current ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS codes matched to your documentation and specialty.
- Provider credentialing and enrollment. End-to-end enrollment with NJ FamilyCare plans, commercial payers, and Medicare, plus re-credentialing maintenance.
- Denial management and recovery. Every denial investigated to root cause, corrected, and appealed with documentation.
- A/R recovery. Aged and outstanding balances audited and pursued, including balances already written off where the appeal window is still open.
- Financial reporting. Clean claim rates, collections, denial patterns, and A/R aging visible by payer and provider.

Frequently asked questions
Why do NJ FamilyCare claims deny even when the provider is enrolled?
Because enrollment is plan-specific. A clinician paneled with Horizon NJ Health is not automatically billable to Aetna Better Health or Wellpoint. Each of the five plans has its own network, so the member’s exact plan must be verified before the visit.
Do you work with all five NJ FamilyCare plans?
Yes. We bill Aetna Better Health of New Jersey, Fidelis Care, Horizon NJ Health, UnitedHealthcare Community Plan, and Wellpoint, as well as commercial and Medicare plans.
How long does it take to switch our billing to MedPlus RCM?
Onboarding takes between 2 and 4 weeks depending on practice size, including data migration and payer clearinghouse setup.
What does MedPlus RCM charge?
A performance-based percentage of successfully collected revenue. If you don’t get paid, we don’t get paid.
